Two Surveyors, one date.

59 years ago today, Surveyor 6 launched on an Atlas-Centaur from LC-36B at Cape Canaveral. It landed in Sinus Medii on 10 November 1967, and a week later fired its engines for a short hop, the first time a spacecraft had lifted off from the surface of the Moon.

29 years later, Mars Global Surveyor launched on a Delta II from SLC-17A. It went on to map Mars for nearly a decade, including the laser altimeter data that provided the first truly global topographic map of the Red Planet.
